The Pirates Children - Michael Lloyd

May 5, 2017

An exciting adventure story written by a master maritime storyteller, blending fact and fiction of the age of piracy for children and the young at heart of all ages

Eleanor Westerley is seventeen and lives with her aunt in seventeenth century England. Upon her aunt’s death she learns some startling information from the will. She decides to embark on a dangerous journey to the pirate-infested Caribbean in the ship which she has discovered belonged to her father, presumed dead. Leaving her estate in the capable hands of her trusted retainers, she takes her younger brothers and sister, who are all that remain of her family.

Headstrong and impetuous, Eleanor engages Jack Crawford, the young captain she finds in a debtors’ prison, to command her ship. Together with the children, whose courage is tested to the limit, they face many life-threatening situations at a time when England is at war with Spain and France and on the high seas it is every man for himself.

Author Bio

Michael was educated at Manchester Grammar School and then attended HMS Conway, the  training ship for cadet officers before going to sea at the age of 16.

This began a fifty-year career both in the Merchant Navy and the Royal Navy taking him around the world.  With thirty-five years as a Captain, he commanded many types of ships in all oceans from the Arctic to the Antarctic. In 1998 he commanded the largest cargo ship in the world taking it on a round the world voyage.

On coming ashore in 2006 he began writing and this continues to this day. While all his books to date have been for adults, he has always wanted to write for younger people and ‘Pirates Children’ is his first such book, combining his knowledge of the sea and the Caribbean and his love of history. He is presently working on the next book in the trilogy.

He received the Merchant Navy Medal in 2010 for his services to the Merchant Navy in publishing and training. Two of his books have been shortlisted for the Mountbatten Prize for Marine Literature.

He lives in West Sussex with his wife Carolyn and five dogs.
