May 26, 2017

A TRUE STORY OF ANGUISH AND DESPAIR
BY A BOY FROM ALEPPO

An extraordinary memoir of growing up in Aleppo in the 1980s, evoking in rich and painful detail the bewildering rituals, rights and wrongs of a Syrian childhood, the smells and sounds, the kindnesses and abuses, friends and monsters.” – Andy Croft

From Aleppo Without Love is an autobiographical novel set in Aleppo, Syria, where the main character was born and raised up to the age of 18.

The novel is split into three parts, each one covering one of the three different houses in which Amir lived during that time.

  • Al Mashad House:  Is where Amir was born and spent his early childhood.  Incidents from this time stain the author’s memory forever.
  • The New Aleppo House:  Following the death of the father, the family move to The New Aleppo House where the protagonist suffers the most shocking of experiences which will forever change his life.
  • Al Martini House:  Introduces us to new characters from outside of the family circle, and is where Amir begins to realise that his experiences at the hands of his violent older brother are at times similar to the outside world.  Covering his teenage years, we see Amir’s sensual identity start to materialise in an environment forbidden any references to sex or sexuality.

Overall, the protagonist finds himself in a contradicting, brutal to children, hateful and constantly violent familial milieu.
