About the Author
"I want to positively help all British Armed Forces men and women increase their chances to get the career and life that they deserve. My mission is to educate and inspire British service leavers no matter what rank or service, to plan and achieve their goals."
Chris Hitchens grew up in Leyland, Lancashire as the middle of three boys. After leaving school and a short spell hairdressing, Chris went on to study engineering.
Chris was persuaded to join the Army after visiting the careers office with a friend and being challenged to take the entrance exam by the Warrant Officer. He subsequently joined the Army Air Corps, 656 Squadron in 1989 as the Squadron Physical Training Instructor, while studying at night to get the grades needed to become a pilot.
Following deployment to Northern Ireland and a stint in the Ops room, Chris successfully completed his pilot selection and was awarded a place on the course. After passing the pilots course, he was posted first to Germany, then to Cyprus where he met people who held senior positions in the financial services industry. These meetings gave Chris the start of an idea and, after being posted back to Northern Ireland, he decided to leave the army and spent his final year completing every course available in readiness of his transition.
After a few permanent roles, Chris formed a limited company and went into the contract market as a sole supplier. Gradually, he formed a proper company and started employing people. The company grew into a multi-million-pound business, the first to get the Investors in People gold aware, and ISO 9001 on the first attempt.
Chris has spoken at many events and run various workshops on how to get a job and get the life you want after leaving the military. It was feedback from these events that encouraged him to share his knowledge and experience in his book, Leaving the Military, which is the first of a series he has planned.
Chris has a wife and two young sons. He devotes what spare time he has to his family, and to managing the Army Air Corps Honour Roll and associated Facebook group.
